The kitchen is by far the most important space in the home, making the overall interior design of the space extremely important. Even if you’ve decided on a specific style with your kitchen design ideas, it may still be difficult finding where to start. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to create a contemporary style kitchen.

Contemporary Kitchen Design Ideas

Before you begin remodeling, ripping down walls and tearing out the backsplash, you’ll want to browse the internet or your favorite design magazine for inspiration. Look at what parts of the contemporary really draw you in, whether it be the backsplash or the countertops, the flooring or some other feature. You can easily incorporate these decorating ideas in with your own kitchen design ideas, making for a unique space that is both functional and visually appealing.

Kitchen Designs: Layout & Budget

Before you begin any work, set up a budget for your space. Include money for the backsplash, new paint, flooring, ceiling work, light fixtures, faucets, appliances, countertops, cabinets and so forth. Then, move on to the next steps of the process.

Next, move on to the layout of your kitchen. You need the space to be functional before it can be beautiful. Think about how you use the space and what is most important to you. If you’re sticking with your existing layout, then consider ways to make it more functional. For example, pull out wire racks to help maximize storage usage or drawer organizers. Good kitchen designs are just as functional as they are beautiful.

Work from the Floor Up

Depending on your contractor, you may start in a different area. Some contractors prefer to install the sub-flooring, cabinets and then the flooring. Others will install the entire floor, then begin filling in the rest of the pieces: cabinetry, appliances and so forth.

If you’re not taking up your flooring or your kitchen design ideas don’t call for new cabinets, then begin in the area that makes the most amount of sense. This could include starting by installing the new countertops, painting the cabinets, installing a backsplash or swapping out the appliances. It’s important to start wherever you feel most comfortable.

What Works in Contemporary Kitchen Designs

There are certain elements that really make a statement in a contemporary kitchen. For example, sleek cabinets and equally sleek hardware are always at-home in contemporary kitchen designs.

These cabinets are often paired with glass backsplashes, which are particularly popular in contemporary kitchen designs. Other backsplashes for the contemporary kitchen include resin covered cork, stainless steel or even concrete.

For countertops, a number of options exist. You can use stainless steel, concrete, granite or marble; all of which fit perfectly into the contemporary style. Don’t forget to add lighting to the space, which is particularly important for the kitchen space, no matter what interior design style is used.

Finally, complete the space with contemporary accessories including organic shaped serving dishes, sleek utensils and so forth.

As always I have enjoyed reading about kitchen designs. My interest in all things in interior design comes from the fact that my son is an architect and my husband was a building contractor.

Thanks for the article!
